Job Description

Company Overview

At GearME we sell gently used outdoor gear and technical apparel from premier brands. We operate on a consignment model, helping people sell their gear and taking a commission on the sale. We also rent outdoor gear and provide advice and experience on enjoying the outdoors in Maine. We are passionate about helping people get outdoors while minimizing their environmental impact. 

Position Summary 

We are looking for a part-time sales associate that will work 1-2 days a week in the store (Sundays required), plus an additional 3-5 hours remotely during the week. In-store responsibilities include providing excellent customer service, processing inventory, and handling rentals. Additional responsibility, done remotely, includes posting items online and maintaining GearME online sales channels on eBay, Mercari, and others. Candidate must be an outdoor enthusiast who shares our desire to help make the outdoors more accessible to all. The ability to connect and enjoy talking with people is critical. 

Responsibilities 

In-Store 

  • Greet customers and provide store/sale information 

  • Answer gear questions knowledgably and provide advice/recommendations 

  • Maintain an understanding of the constantly changing inventory in the store 

  • Process sales at the register 

  • Tag and hang/display new items  

  • Relocate and retag items as they move through discount stages to expiration 

  • Provide information and paperwork for consignment drop-off; record items picked up by consignors 

  • Handle rental transactions including rental paperwork, detailed communication, and return procedures. Assist renters with lifting and securing canoes and kayaks for transport.

  • Learn to take excellent product photos for online sales and advertising

  • Clean and maintain store cleanliness 

  • Clean and prepare new items for sale; clean returning rental items 

 

Remote Work 

  • Post store items online on multiple sites, including Mercari, eBay, GearTrade, Facebook, and the GearME web site 

  • Research product info to write informational, honest, accurate selling points 

  • Drive online sales by actively maintaining listings, and by promoting certain items and deleting sold items 

  • Make informed, independent decisions to negotiate or reduce prices based on business needs 

 

Qualifications 

  • Must be an outdoors enthusiast with broad experience in outdoor recreation (although expertise in a particular area is not required).  

  • Must be experienced and knowledgeable about outdoor recreation opportunities in Maine 

  • Must understand outdoor gear technology and proper use 

  • Must enjoy learning about people, building rapport, and creating an environment that turns customers into regulars 

  • Must be willing and able to use personal devices (computer, phone, etc.) to manage product listings on website and apps 

  • Must have a remote work environment that allows for focus and concentration 

  • Must be able to confidently answer customer questions and make recommendations 

  • Must prioritize exceptional organization to keep track of ever-changing inventory from hundreds of consignors 

  • Must have the ability to lift and tandem carry canoes and kayaks

  • Retail associate experience preferred 

  • Experience selling on multiple online platforms preferred

 

Time Requirements 

  • Sundays required, 7 hours per shift 

  • Occasional Saturdays preferred 

  • Weekday remote work, 3 – 5 hours a week 

 

Pay and Perks 

  • Starting pay $14/hr

Employment at GearME

We are currently hiring for a part time Sales Associate to help with both in-store customer service and online sales. This position requires weekly Sunday availability, occasional Saturdays, and 3-5 hours of weekday work, which can be done remotely. The business has grown steadily since we opened in 2018, and now it’s time to hire our first sales associate to help us continue the exciting growth.
